Not long ago, I was sitting down with some of my roommates, reminiscing about the good old days. This conversation included Myrtle. “What’s Myrtle?” one might ask. Simply put, Myrtle describes the four days at the end of each year when F&M students crowd the dirty beaches of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, relishing the feeling of being done with finals and (for those who are legal) drinking a bit too much. But that’s just how it is.
So, I had an epiphany. How will Myrtle continue this year? Not to be a Debby Downer, but it might not. I mean, people are still going to go, I’m sure. It just may never be what it once was. There is a silver-lining, however. With the lack of excitement that will surround these four days, people may be less focused on achieving that dreaded “Myrtle Bod.”
The “Myrtle Bod” refers to the beach body that the student population attempts to obtain before arriving at Myrtle. Given everything going on, I sense that people will relax about getting in perfect shape this year. Hopefully, at least. But if this is the case, then we will only have finals to stress about in the end.
