By the Sociology Department Faculty
We, the Sociology Department faculty, write to address the recent police murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Dreasjon “Sean” Reed, Tony McDade, and David McAtee, as well as the vigilante murder of Ahmaud Arbery by three perpetrators, including a former law enforcement officer. We will continue to Say Their Names. We unequivocally stand by the Black Lives Matter movement. We adamantly condemn all racist and transphobic state and vigilante violence, and we stand by our students and colleagues who are grieving and angry right now in response to these recent events, as well as the innumerable similar events that have led to our present socio-historical moment. We will continue to support your commitments to critically engage with the social and political structures that perpetuate oppression and injustice, and we will work towards eradicating them within our community and our country.
