Looking for a fun music class at F&M? Professor Beebe is offering a new course here at F&M. The course description is as follows:

MUS 275; The Birth of Opera

Are you interested in music and the historical foundation of where performing on stage began? Do you like to sing or perform yourself? Then come take this new class in the fall and learn about the history of opera and where it all started! Taught by Grammy-winning voice professor Jessica Beebe, this class meets Mondays and Wednesdays at 1:00 PM.

This class will explore opera in the Baroque Era (1600-1750), from both performance and historical perspectives. The course addresses musical conventions such as recitative, ornamentation, and figured bass, in addition to aspects of staging and costume design and the prominent role of castrati singers. Music studied includes operas and other works by Claudio Monteverdi, George Frideric Handel, Jean-Baptiste Lully and other European composers active during the period. Student musicians and non-musicians alike will participate in the staging and performance of select opera scenes according to their abilities and background skills.
