As the semester begins at Franklin & Marshall, one of the campus’s most beloved musical groups is looking to expand their group. Kite & Keys, F&M’s a cappella group for women and gender minorities, has announced their spring auditions with a clear message: all are welcome, regardless of your musical background.

“Whether you’re an experienced singer or completely new to music, we welcome everyone. No prior musical experience is necessary to audition – just bring your voice, your enthusiasm, and your love for making music,” says McConn Honor’26, the group’s president.

For first-year student Chaeli Nelson, the decision to audition came naturally. “Music has always been a huge part of who I am,” she explained. “I did a cappella, voice lessons, and choir in high school and really enjoyed it. When I arrived on campus, I knew that joining a music group would be a great opportunity to make friends and have a fun after-school activity. Kite and Keys seemed like the best fit for me, so I decided to audition.”

Love singing in the shower? Dream of learning to beatbox? You’ll fit right in at Kite & Keys. The group sings everything from classic ABBA hits to modern favorites by Lorde and Bruno Mars. You’ll also get to perform songs by artists like Hozier, Lana Del Rey, and Chappell Roan. But Kite & Keys isn’t just about the music – it’s about the friendships you make while creating something beautiful together.

What sets Kite & Keys apart from traditional musical organizations is their emphasis on enthusiasm over experience. “No prior musical experience is necessary,” Honor emphasizes. “We’re looking for people who love music and want to be part of our community. The only requirements are your voice and your passion for making music,” Honor announces.

Those interested in getting a preview of what Kite & Keys has to offer can explore their performances on YouTube or follow their journey on Instagram (@kiteandkeysfandm). These platforms showcase not just their musical accomplishments, but also the genuine camaraderie that defines the group.

As students continue seeking connection and creative ways to express themselves this semester, Kite & Keys offers both. Their emphasis on creating a fun, welcoming environment while pursuing their musical passion has made them an essential part of F&M’s performing arts community.
